Description

There is a sound that means you have arrived.

Two notes, sometimes three, as the automatic doors part. It plays a hundred times a day and nobody who lives in Japan hears it any more. For a traveller it lodges somewhere and stays.

This keychain plays that chime. Press once, and the doors slide open.

Melody used with permission from the original composer, Yasushi Inada. A royalty is paid to him on every unit sold.

Curator's note

However many trips I have made, the konbini is still the part I miss first.

It is never the plan. It is where you end up at the end of a long day, feet aching, when what you need is hot food, a cold drink and somewhere bright and open. You walk out with more than you went in for and you feel human again.

The chime is the part that stayed with me. You hear it so many times across a trip that it stops being a sound and becomes the feeling of stepping in out of the cold. Anyone who has been will recognise it instantly, and be right back there.

That is what this is. Not a souvenir of a place, a souvenir of a feeling.
